Starting school is a big transition for children and families. While there is often a lot of focus on recognising letters, writing names and counting, school readiness involves much more than academic skills.
At Your Speech Room, our School Readiness Program is designed to support children as they prepare for the transition to Kindergarten. The program focuses on the communication, pre-literacy, early learning, social and everyday skills that children can use to participate, connect with others and feel more confident in their new school environment.
Through engaging and structured activities, children will have opportunities to practise important skills in a supportive environment alongside other children who are also preparing for school.

What will children learn in our School Readiness Program?
Communication skills
Communication is an important part of participating in the classroom and building relationships with teachers and peers.
Children will practise:
• Using greetings such as “hello” and “good morning”
• Recognising and using their peers' names
• Asking and answering questions
• Communicating their needs and ideas
• Participating in conversations with others
• Listening to and responding to adults and peers
Following instructions and classroom routines
School involves many instructions and routines throughout the day. Children will be supported to practise listening to and following simple instructions in a group environment.
For example:
• “Sit on the floor.”
• “Find your name.”
• “Put your book away.”
• “Get your pencil.”
• “Come and sit at the table.”
Early literacy and print awareness
Children will be introduced to early literacy skills that provide a foundation for learning to read and write.
Activities may include:
• Recognising their own name
• Recognising their peers' names
• Tracing their name
• Practising writing their name
• Developing awareness that print carries meaning
• Looking at books and talking about pictures and stories
• Participating in shared book activities
These activities are designed to build familiarity and confidence with early literacy rather than expecting children to master these skills before starting school.
Social participation and School Etiquette
School is a social environment where children are learning alongside other children. We will provide opportunities for children to practise participating in a group and navigating common classroom expectations.
This may include:
• Waiting for a turn
• Putting up their hand to contribute to a discussion
• Listening when someone else is speaking
• Joining group activities
• Sharing materials and spaces
• Learning how to participate in classroom routines
Our approach recognises that children communicate and participate in different ways. We focus on giving children practical strategies and opportunities to build confidence, rather than expecting every child to behave in exactly the same way.
Independence and Everyday Skills
Starting school can involve many new routines and responsibilities. Supporting children to develop independence can make these routines more manageable.
Children may practise skills such as:
• Managing their belongings
• Following simple classroom routines
• Moving between activities
• Asking for assistance
• Participating in group and table activities

Why practise these skills before starting school?
For many children, school will be a completely new environment with new people, routines and expectations. Having opportunities to practise some of these skills beforehand can help make the transition feel more familiar.
The goal is not for children to be “perfectly ready” before they start school. Instead, we want to support children to develop skills that can help them participate in their new environment, communicate with others, build independence and feel confident trying new things.
