JILLIAN CALIZAR
BAppSc (SpPath) (Hons), CPSP

Jillian completed her Speech Pathology Honours degree in 2018 at The University of Sydney. She has gained valuable experience working with children and families from a range of cultural backgrounds. Jillian is passionate about making speech pathology services accessible to families. She believes that family inclusion is essential in the management process and that each child’s communication abilities should be considered holistically in the context of their family and community. She is very interested in the link between behaviour and communication. She also has a special interest in late talkers and has conducted research into late talkers’ speech and language development.

Jillian has a dog with a serious underbite and she enjoys teaching him new tricks. Her hobbies include baking, playing video games, and wrapping presents. Her favourite game to play in the office is Shark Bite because she always gets surprised when the shark…bites. Jillian’s favourite app to use for therapy is Articulation Station because it is a fun way to practise speech sounds with her clients. Jillian’s speech motto is ‘communicate to connect’.

In 2019, Jillian attended and presented at the Speech Pathology Australia National Conference in Brisbane. She continues to be active in university research and development. Jillian has participated in several Speech Pathology studies including research into adult voice disorders, the assessment of paediatric speech sound disorders, and Speech Pathology student experiences. In university, Jillian was a proud and active member of the Key Word Sign Interest group and has continued this interest by attending ‘Key Word Sign Basic Workshops’. She has further developed her skills by attending workshops including the ‘CATALISE: A Multinational and Multidisciplinary Delphi Consensus Study. Identifying Language Impairments in Children’ workshop and 'NDIS Faculty Forum' at The University of Sydney. Jillian is a current member of Speech Pathology Australia, through which she accesses the latest Speech Pathology research and ongoing professional development opportunities.

Dorothy has a particularly interest in the areas of autism, early intervention, and stuttering. She has undergone further training to support these populations and is a Hanen Certified therapist. She also speaks Mandarin and Cantonese. Dorothy loves to have fun in the clinic and is best friends with Mr Potato Head and Porky Pig!  In her spare time, you might find Dorothy trying new cuisines, spending time with friends and family, or with her nose buried in a book!

JEMMA DEMASI
BSPP, CPSP

Jemma has recently moved from Adelaide to Sydney, and is looking forward to exploring everything NSW has to offer. Jemma graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology in 2019.

Jemma enjoys working with both adults and children, but has developed a passion for supporting children, young adults and their families with all their speech and language needs. She takes particular interest in the areas of phonological awareness, movement for learning and literacy. Jemma looks forward to learning more about these areas and many more, soaking up knowledge from the wonderful YSR team and their areas of speciality.

Jemma’s passion outside of speech pathology is for dogs, in particular Labradors. Her favourite thing to do is to visit her Aunt who is a breeder and take her 6 Labradors for big walks through the paddocks and vineyards or even down to the beach. Jemma loves cooking and baking and has been known to make novelty cakes for her family and friends (including Gru and his Minions from Despicable Me) or whip up a fantabulous batch of homemade pasta.

When in the office Jemma likes helping the Hungry Dino’s eat all the food they can and she loves using movement to engage the clients and herself in therapy including balloon keep up, jumping races and dance breaks. Online, she enjoys helping all the animal's race to the finish line in Smarty Pants Animal Races!

Jemma believes that “the most important thing in communication, is to listen to what isn’t being said...” and in doing so believes we can truly support each client and their individual needs.

Jemma has attended workshops to expand upon her areas of interest, including: “Teaching Behaviour Skills Training: Parent Coaching” - To the Moon and Back, NSW, “Warp Speed Download: Essential Info to Jumpstart Your Teletherapy Practice” - BrIQht Ideas and “Movement for Learning” - University Department of Rural Health, NSW. Jemma is also a current member of Speech Pathology Australia, receiving up to date information about the profession and ways to improve our practice.
