Language Therapy

What is a Language Delay/Disorder?
Language facilitates learning. There are two main areas of language including expressive and receptive language. These are further classified into written, verbal and non-verbal language skills.
What is Expressive Language?

Expressive language is how we get our message across to others using words, symbols, sign language, eye contact and/or body movements. A child with good expressive language is able to use gestures, words, writing and/or sign language to communicate, rather than, pushing, pulling and/or crying. Improving a child’s expressive communication empowers them to have positive relationships.
What is Receptive Language?
Receptive language is how we understand others. This involves understanding words, questions, instructions and concepts. Receptive Language is not just understanding what others say/sign to us but it also includes concentration and memory.
Does my child have an Expressive or Receptive Language Delay/Disorder?
If you are concerned about your child’s expressive or receptive language, complete our free online checklist .
It is important to target language difficulties as soon as they are detected. Identifying language difficulties at a young age can prevent children from falling too far behind their peers and as a result, struggling academically and socially.
